Amidst the hue and cry raised by parliamentarians and businessmen over the stringent conditions allowing arrests in tax fraud cases, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Monday instructed relaxation and incorporation of six necessary conditions in the Finance Act to avoid the misuse of power by the FBR officers.
Chairing a review meeting on the matters related to the FBR, the prime minister directed the formation of a special committee and directed that the business community or taxpayers should not be harassed under any circumstances.
Ministers for defence, law, commerce, economic affairs, information and broadcasting, minister of state for railways, chairman FBR, economic experts, and senior officials attended the meeting.
Shehbaz was briefed that the legal provisions for the arrest of sales tax defaulters had been part of the law since the 1990s; however, in light of decisions by the courts, amendments were being made to the clauses to make them more coherent.
After thoroughly reviewing the matter, the prime minister opined that harassing regular taxpayers was unacceptable.
